Week 1

In February 2010 I received an email from a few film makers working from the United States. They asked if I would be interested in working with them on a Doritos chips commercial to be aired during the super bowl in February 2011. In 2009 I entered the Doritos, “Make an Ad” competition. This entry was completed in less than two days in total, however it was through this commercial that they had found me on YouTube.com.

At the time I had just begun working on a music video that would be entered into the Queensland New Filmmakers Awards. On top of this I was working part time in a bottle shop, so I asked what they needed before agreeing to the project.

The project was pitched as a 30 second commercial in which a team of Doritos packets played the final few seconds of a NFL game against a “Bland” chip brand. I quoted $500 as they told me they wanted to use live action footage throughout, and told me there would be approximately 10 seconds of actual animation.

After discussing the project over the following week it was decided that the commercial would run smoother if practically the whole thing was animated rather than trying to composite it with live action footage. It was also decided that the animation would be traditionally done in Flash as I felt more confident in 2D than 3D. I said I would storyboard the clip before I agreed to animate it as the project was shaping up to be much more ambitious than initially thought.
